• Full dental check up and treatment


• Buy prescription eyeglasses that will last long


• Shop for high quality clothes, shoes and bags


• Speak to your children in your native language and teach them to speak it as well


• Travel the Philippines when you can


• Make lots of good memories

Don't:

• Red ribbon your documents - Red ribbon doesn't mean anything in New Zealand. Bring all originals.


• Get an international driving permit - Your pro/non-pro PH (or other country's) license would do in NZ.


• Tell your family and friends you'll be rich in NZ

May Pei Pa Koa syrup dito pero yung lozenges ay sa Pilipinas lang nabibili. Mag-stock up kayo kasi sobrang effective sa ubo tuwing winter. Favorite siya ng mga workmates ko rito na hindi Pinoy. Kaso pag nalalaman nilang galing pa sa Pinas, nalulungkot sila kasi di sila makabili.

DAPAT GAWIN:
- Set the right expectations (more like lower your expectations) so when things don't go as planned, you won't be disappointed/frustrated.
- Appreciate the remaining time you have in Philippines (if you're about to leave), spend heaps of time with your friends and family. It's not cheap to travel back for holiday and if you ever do, it will feel like the holiday is not enough, lalo kung kailangan mo bumalik at may work ka at nag leave ka lang.


DI DAPAT GAWIN:
- Assume that everything will be better/easier. Some things will be and some won't, may advantages/disadvantages ang pag move sa NZ, the earlier you become aware of them, the better.

how about po sa programming language na dapat alam muna bago kapa magpunta ng NZ?

Hi malemond11. Sa totoo lang kahit aralin mo yung mga main programming languages na sa tingin mo ay kailangan, titingnan pa rin nila yung work experience mo talaga.

I guess it's good to have a background or knowledge on other languages pero if you want them to really matter sa job hunting, mas maganda kung makakakuha ka ng real job experiences. Create projects that can be used by clients in those languages that you want to study. Sa company namin PHP pa rin ang main language kasi small-medium business kami.

Kung ang target mo ay big companies, usually Java or .Net and the likes yung ginagamit. Check seek.co.nz to get a better understanding on the demand for programming.

I think I want to add this. Huwag over confident na makakahanap agad ng trabaho kasi if you do baka madismaya ka at bumaba tingin mo sa sarili... baka magkadepression at magka problema pa ang buong family. hehehehe=) Accept things as they come. After all we cannot choose the blessings and trials we receive, we only have to be ready for everything. Have more faith! =)

That's a very good point Genean, lalo na sa mga tipong mataas na ang posisyon sa trabaho nila sa Pilipinas, don't expect that NZ owes you because you spent X years working for certain multination company, kasi you might just end up being disappointed dahil kahit simpleng entry level hindi makapasok, pano pa kaya yung bossing level nila. I mean don't get me wrong, it doesn't mean magpakababa ka but you have to understand na ibang bansa, ibang culture, so set the right expectations and be prepared for all scenarios. I understand it's unfair for some companies to not give merit to experience pero wala ganon talaga, tayo yung dapat mag adjust sa country nila. Usually overtime naman they find na masipag talaga mga Pinoy and they do acknowledge and give where credit is due.

If you find yourself an equally paying/fulfuilling job like before or even a better one, then good on you! But majority of the stories we hear requires some sort of adjustment.

minsan lang ako magbasa ng mga emails from AKL yahoo group but this morning I just randomly opened an email with subject: Same experience you have in NZ. It's all about negativity about their experience in NZ. Well ang totoo hindi lahat ng pumupunta sa NZ ay "sinusuwerte" , QUOTE and ENDQUOTE kasi hindi naman dahil yan sa swerte kundi dahil sa ano expectations nyo pagpunta at mag-migrate sa bansang ito. Kung madaming naging maayos ang pagsettle dito, madami din ang umuwi or lumipat sa ibang bansa. I guess at first we all had the same experiences nung tumapak tayo sa airport ng NZ, nung nahirapan tayo maghanap ng work kahit ilang CVs na ang nasend natin at kadalasan unsuccessful/rejection emails... pero nagkakaiba iba yung experience ng bawat isa later on kasi we have different views, opinions at goals. sabi ng isa, racist daw ang bansang ito at para sa puti lang ang mga trabaho - maaaring matindi at naging mahirap ang nangyari sa kanya pero hindi naman lahat, marami pa din ang mababait at maaayos na kiwi. Expectation is the key, sabi nga sa mga nabanggit sa itaas ng forum na ito, lalo na sa sinabi ni sis Genean . kung sa paglipat mo ng ibang bansa ay natupad ang mga gusto mong mangyari, you deserve it at malamang it's your destiny.

Professional ka so masyado mo ng minamaliit ang ibang trabaho? Pare-pareho lang tayong ipinanganak ng nakahubad. Konting tapak sa lupa, masyado ka ng mataas. Oh by the way, hindi talaga ang profession ang pinakabasis dito. kahit na gaano kaganda credentials mo and kahit ikaw na ang pinakahenyong tao, kung sablay ang attitude mo, hindi ka nila magugustuhan dito sa NZ. DO your research
DO be humble and have the right attitude, be positive
DO reflect on yourself. DO ask questions (why?)
DO network
DO live frugally especially if your just starting (when you arrive here in NZ)
DO set your goals, plans and back up plans
DO show appreciation with the opportunities that come along your way

DON'T expect too much
DON'T be negative
DON'T bring your pride (chicken!)
DON'T be maluho (extravagant)
DON'T get too much excited

DO reflect on what went wrong and how you could have done better if you had another chance.
DO your research. At this day and age where almost everything is online, you have less reason to be ignorant
DO not blame NZ or its policies on prioritizing Kiwis. You would wish the same for the Philippines.

DON'T believe easily on hearsay. Mag research nga or kung hindi researchable, give benefit of the doubt.
DON'T believe na lahat ng tao especially kapwa Pinoy ay handang tumulong. Madami ding mga manloloko. Totoo iyong mga nagtatake advantage lalo na kung baguhan lang kayo sa ibang bansa. Mayroong mga nagpapa rent ng mahal, so again back to DO your research well.
DON'T let anyone bring you down.
DON'T provide false expectations to other people. Ipaalam sa kanila na hindi mamumulot ng pera dito. Huwag mangako na magpapadala ng sustento, huwag muna kukuha ng size ng sapatos.
DON'T put your hopes to Batman. hehe

DO follow you passion or dream. Ano bang career path ang gusto mo? Again, ask yourself. Reflect.
DO write down your priorities. Career ba ang priority mo? long term goal mo na ba ito na career ang nasa number 1 lists mo? Habang tumatanda tayo, nag iiba priorities natin.
DO expect worst case scenario. Kapag hindi ako naging successful sa ganito, ano ang puwede kong gawin? Willing ba akong gawin ito?
DO bring back up funds. Kung kaya, mas maganda kung madaming back up na pera.
DO bring skills na puwedeng gamiting pang raket (e.g. kung marunong kang manggupit ng buhok, manicure/pedicure, mag masahe, manghula(lol), magpintura, magkumpuni, atbp)
DO pray, pray, pray and PRAY!

I've been reading a lot of forums lately and I must admit, this is one of the most organized forum (Top 5) that I've joined. Just to share some thoughts about the topic, mukhang sa lahat ng lugar na pwede po natin puntahan eh may mga kalahi tayong Pilipino na may hindi maayos na character. There are some of our fellow countrymen na ganyan din ang mentality dito sa Singapore and everywhere else siguro. Nakaka-lungkot lang kasi nasisira ang imahe ng mga kababayan natin na nagpapakabuti sa kanya-kanyang lugar na pinuntahan para makipag-sapalaran.

Hello po Mam db. Salamat po sa advice.

I am actually hesitant to just dive in to offers circulating here in Singapore from our fellow filipino's saying na "they can land you to AU, CA and even NZ by letting them process the documents and applications" I've been doing a lot of reading and i have a housemate that just got their PR Visa approved last this month. Maybe because his sister helped him but I am happy for my friend's accomplishment to bring his family to NZ.

Hopefully this January 2015 i can send my EOI to see if it gets selected.
