Guys, puwde kayang makakuha ng permanent job and hold a working visa kahit yung nakuha mong trabaho ay hindi in line sa degree at experience mo? Let's say I am a secondary school teacher and I will get a job on customer service or call center or for three months I have been trained for a skilled job. Possible ba yun?

Hi ryell.

Hello guys, when we apply for a job, do we have to emphasize that our work visa is working holiday visa and is allowed for three months to work in every employer?
How did you guys go about it?

Hi ryell. I've seen some cover letters that didn't include info about WHV, and some that did. I remember, there was a Malaysian WHV holder. She posted some of her application letters that landed her a job in NZ. If I recall correctly, one of her application letter/s started with: Dear Sir/Madam: I came from Malaysia, and currently holding a work visa under the Working Holiday scheme...(Something ganyan) Dear Sir/Madam: Your advertisement of job vacancy caught my attention. It happens to be I am in Auckland...(Hindi na sya nagbangit about work visa, then nagstate na sya selling points on why she should be considered for an interview.) This is just based on what I've seen across the net, so still...not sure. hehe Just go nalang with what your heart tells you! charot hahaha On another note, kumusta na po mga WHV holders na nasa NZ? Hehee

If I'm the employer it would be important for me to know that I can only keep you for 3 months. Or if you want to be permanent I can start preparing documents that you might need.

Hi, I am posting this in response to those who sent me PM..Para isang bagsakang sagutan nalang.. I arrived in Auckland last January 14, 2015. So today is my 49th day in NZ (read: N-Zed). I started sending out work applications a week after that. As of writing, I think I have forwarded more than 120 copies of different versions of my CV/cover letter, both for long-term skilled job and casual work. Until now, I still have no job, not even an invitation for a personal interview. Yun bale ang Intro. Hehe So ganoon ba talaga kahirap maghanap ng work dito? I am not sure, it depends i think. Sa case ko kasi, I am applying for a SOFTWARE TEST ANALYST position. Yong background ko is banking and finance (banking, credit card, insurance). I have 1 year testing (most recent) and 3+ years of COBOL programming work experience. I mean, mostly sinasabing "has automation experience" or "has knowlegde on these technologies: a. b. , etc". Pagka as COBOL programmer naman, naku, mi isa or dalawa pero at least 5yrs work experience ang hinahanap nila. So based dun sa mga job openings na nakita ko, i don't think i am qualified (although i sent an application anyway!). At Failure Analysis Engineer din ako for 1.3 years, I even sent an application to some head professor kasi baka kailangan nila ng lab assistant, pero declined pa rin. Ang kagandahan lang is that they reply to your application, sometimes they call you. and they would tell you that there are other applicants more qualified than you are. you can even call them to discuss. these are mostly recruiters pala ha. I trust naman na they really keep my CV in their database and that they were really able to follow my CV kasi when we talked on the phone, nasasabi naman nila na ganun ang background ko at hanap ko preferably is permanent position, etc. By the way, my kasabayan pala ako ng pagpunta pero sa Sydney naman siya. And PR siya doon. As of last conversation namin, wala pa rin daw siyang work. I know parang yong starting position nga lang din pinapagapplayan niya.. I went to a JobFest in Manukau to try my luck. Kaboom, more than 70% of the companies i approached, i was declined right away because of the visa i have! some told me that 3 months is the time to train a personnel so they said that it is very impractical hiring me.. Yong mga sinusubukan ko kasi is yong mga pang OFFICE or retail, but very seldom lang merong openings akong nakikita. CAN DRIVE and has his own car.. SANA. If you asked me, my answer is that when you are READY. That means: 1. You are financially-capable to support yourself for AT LEAST 3 months. Below's from my classmate in college. I AGREE on the figures he gave. Also, I STRONGLY suggest to check NUMBEO.com because the figures are pretty accurate. Just try to explore the site and you'll be amazed.. "E2 cgro summary ng expense mo per month if you choose to live alone in central city: 1) Rent: ~800 (if you are alone), kung flatting, can be cheaper 2) Utilities: ~50 3) Mobile phone: ~40 4) Broadband: ~50 (can be cheaper if you flat) 5) Grocery: ~300 6) Dining: ~200 (e2 ung magastos, so need to be done in control) 7) Haircut: ~25 8) Transport: (very variable) maybe 100/month depending on where you live Total: ~1500NZD/month. This can easily go beyond that kung lalo kung may transport cost pa kasama but I advise na sa central city muna tumira then hopefully work will be in the area as well. Mahal kasi pamasahe dito. I'd recommend na 2000/month for at least 3 months (ideally 6 months)." 2. You have studied and understood the demand of your field of work. Pay special attention of SEEK.com kasi as i have said, ma-giGAUGE mo naman kung in demand ang work mo kasi napaka-specific nilang maghanap ng gusto nilang ihire. Try to apply while still outside especially if you are highly skilled kasi you might get lucky and they'll be willing to sponsor you. If you aren't as lucky as I am, please keep in mind that applying here is more challenging for us WHV holders because aside from the fact that there are alot of competition (you'll be surprised to see when you get here that there are a lot of people in the city PALA, promise!) they always prefer to hire Permanent Residents for obvious reasons. 3. You have made your research by reading and asking the essential things you need to know. kaya basa lang ng basa para buhay ay liligaya, hehe -- So ang advice ko basically is huwag munang sumabak sa giyera kapag hindi pa handa. Take as much time as you can. Save, save, save. Try to apply before coming if your purpose of coming here is to find a permanent skilled job. And most importantly, hope for the best but be VERY prepared when the worse comes your way.. Good luck and hope to bump into you in the future!

Thanks for sharing your story Sir Cob123. That's also the biggest fear I have, I have no automation background. I am starting to study automation on my own but I'm not sure if that would be enough. I am hoping to hear positive news from you. I'm sure your Ate is right, if you're that determined, success is destined for you. More power and never lose hope.

Just give me time to organize everything, at medyo pre-occupied lang ako sa buhay2x ko ngayon. Hehe
After two months of being unsuccessful in finding an employer that can sponsor me a long-term work visa, I have decided to proceed to plan B, which is to go outside Auckland and find a backpacking work. Very quickly lang. Nasa Tauranga ako ngayon kasi start na ng Kiwi Season and I am scheduled to start with packing work this week. <To be continued, promise!>
I am sharing a personal entry I wrote in my Facebook account to give you a LITTLE glimpse of my experience so far. Sabihin ko nalang in advance din, living in a backpacker hostel is like living in the Big Brother House ( i will elaborate next time).
Here's my Facebook post: **This album is about the people i meet along the way while fulfilling my "working holiday" around New Zealand** Let me start with this 20-year-old lad. His name is Lukas. I am sharing a room with him for another month in a backpacker hostel. We hit it off easily and chatted comfortably as soon as we were introduced. When I asked him where he's from, he answered, "Deutschland, or Germany to the outside world". Actually, when I saw him with his blue eyes, blond hair, and white skin, i knew right away that he was German because he very much fitted the description of someone with Aryan lineage (based on some novel I read). I laughed so hard when he told me that he hitched-hike 6 times getting to the hostel to save 30NZD. It was his first time to do it and was quite proud about it. He said it was very easy and encouraged me to try it. He is by the way a twin. The other half, a sister, is travelling in the South island of NZ (but later on is bound to do holiday work also since according to him, he has more money than her as of the moment). He on the other hand had to make a detour here to do kiwi picking and earn some money first which he plans to spend in the beautiful South. The twins just came from Asia, and is going to Fiji Island and the US after their stint here. Their expenses? They paid all of it individually by working while studying in Deutschland, I mean Germany. I joked why not just asked money from their parents. He said he can, but he won't, because the money that he spends for leisure should be coming from his hard labour, and not from other people's.. Attaboy!!! This is the TOP 3 things that comes to mind that will always remind me of him: 1. Max Mustermann is like the John Doe of Germany. He is everywhere, and overused! 2. Even though majority of the Germans understand English, he said that the US movies and TV shows shown locally are dubbed in German. The funny thing is that whoever dubs a particular actor is bound to dub him going forward. He said they like these actors to sound consistently. Hehe. 3. He taught me how to use an ear plug properly! Due to my ignorance, I threw 2 different sets before, thinking it didn't work on me. I didn't know that you just have to roll it first to compact it, then pull your ear upwards before inserting it. It worked! Now I don't have to be ticked off by the ticking of the clock which makes me believe I am crazy. He assured me though that I am not because when his friends sleeps over at his room, he said some would request to have it removed, but added that it's indeed a very noisy clock, hehe

Hello sa lahat! I'm new here sa group. Nagstart ako mag-plan mag apply last year. So, inabangan ko talaga yung day ng opening for 2015/16, which is Feb 10 if I'm not mistaken. I set a reminder on my phone, NZ time para siguradong umabot ako sa 100 slots na available. Kaso pag check ko, 2mins past 10am, sabi sakin puno na daw yung slot for 2015/16. I tried ulit a few times on the same day, wala talaga. Salamat

in 10 minutes napuno agad ang slot based on my experience last feb 5, 2015.

Next time na ako magkukwento tungkol sa kiwi pack house and backpacker place.
SOBRANG HIRAP maghanap ng long term work especially kung hindi solid ang work experience and skill set niyo. Bakit ko nasabi? kasi andami kong nakakausap which are in the same boat. At kung mapapansin niyo sa SEEK, palaging nakalagay na disclaimer: at least residents or has valid work visa. Hindi tayo kasama sa 'has valid work visa' na sinasabi nila kaya out na agad tayo!
As of writing, it's my 3rd month here and so far: -1 company invited me for a Sit-in Exam (which i flunked simply because I took the exam unprepared) -1 recruiter interviewed me in person. i think it went well. but it was for future vacancies. toink! -less than 10 called me in my phone asking for additional details -most recruiters replied telling me they won't progress with my application because there are people more qualified than me BUT they have saved my CV in their database just in case something came up
2. Move out of Auckland as soon as possible!
Ayoko kasing lumabas kasi baka may tumawag for an interview. Mahirap pala talagang makipagcompete sa Auckland ng temporary work kasi residents and students makakalaban mo. Don't worry sa long-term application ninyo kasi ang kagandahan dito, yong mga phone number na nakalagay online (palaging may contact number silang nilalagay), pwede mo lang tawagan using your mobile phone dahil pareho lang ang bawas mapa landline or mobile. sobra2x pa nga ang local minutes sa monthly plan ko (29NZD/month). At sila kung magadvertise ng vacancy, matagal! minsan umaabot ng buwan to take applications palang (hindi pa kasama yong next process) kaya kung maghihintay ka lang, naku goodluck!
3. Find work ASAP!
kapag hindi ka rich kid, i suggest find holiday work asap! mahirap ang nakatingga ng matagal kasi your mind can go berseck and it can lower your self esteem. Meron akong nadownload na magandang reference for seasonal work(search: 'IEP_WNZ SEasonal Work'). Meron ding list of working hostels and contact numbers per place kaya ang ginawa ko ay tinawagan ko yong isang backpacker place and asked the manager if there's still space and if they can help me find seasonal work. I am staying in a backpacker now with 20+ people all of which are on a WVH and mostly are here for the kiwi season. Ang kagandahan pa, if you worked for 3 months sa horticulture, you can extend another 3 months. You just need to show 12 weeks of your payslip and pay **i think** 165NZD.  BTW isingit ko lang, ang pangit lang sa backpackers pala, ang mahal ng INTERNET DATA! kung sa bahay/flat ka kasi, mura lang at mabilis pa, eh kung ganitong set-up, iba. to give you an idea: 20MB is 1NZD, 200MB is 5NZD, 500MB is 10, 1G is 15. Kaya mapapa library kayo ng madalas kasi libre! Or better yet choose yong sim na may magandang data plans.  Ang Spark meron silang free 1G daily if you go sa hotspot nila (parang phonebooth).
4. Buy a car as soon as you get here!
Ito yong mahirap for me kasi wala akong kotse ngayon. Basta, bili na akong kotse after kiwi season talaga, hehe
Opppps times up, next time ulit (kung kelan man yan). Very quickly lang (will try to write in detail in the future), yong kiwi pack house, factory work siya basically. definitely hindi mental job, purely physical job. depends kung san ka maaassign (e.g. a) packer - dapat listo kasi minsan mabilis ang takbo ng conveyor so dapat mailagay mo ang mga kiwi sa box ng mabilis din or else they'll drop on the floor b) grader- tagahusga kung reject o hindi ang kiwi c) stacker - parang kargador! hehe). Don't worry andami ninyong naka-WHV kaya parang 'we're all in this together' lang. Kung hindi ikaw yong sobrang clumsy, no need to worry. Pay is basically minimum (14.75/hr). Tax sa payslip ko around 17%. I work night shift (6pm-4am) but no night diff. Very irregular ang sked kasi kapag umulan minsan walang pasok. How irregular? 2 weeks we worked 12/14 days, 2 weeks we worked 8/14 days. Minsan half day work lang. Sometimes you know if there is work days before, sometimes you learn only the day itself.

Not sure if it will apply to others. This is my opinion. Kung ako ay may WHV at gusto ko talaga mag-stay sa NZ, hahanap ako ng trabaho kung saan magaling ako at gagalingan ko, which would convince my employer that they badly need to keep me. Kapag kasi naisip ng employer mo na madali lang makahanap ng kapalit mo dahil walang something different about you, lalong mahina ang chance mo to get a permanent role. If I will be asked to pick strawberries, I'll do something more and pick grapes after picking strawberries. Hindi yan literal ha? Haha.. Parang ganyan ang idea ko. Although most of the time, this is only the ideal situation and not reality. A really good personality and great communication skills are keys to getting and keeping a job.

Hello fellow WHV holders, I chanced to read a blog and I think this is very inspiring. Allow me to quote a piece of the entry: "About my background, I was born in Malaysia. I used to stayed with my family and I worked in Kuala Lumpur for years. One day I decided to leave my home, quit my job and join the Working Holiday scheme in New Zealand. It was at my age 24. Then, my entire life changed. I found a permanent job in Wellington, since then I live in New Zealand by myself." oppositejourney.com/category/about-me/In prayer and determination, we can make it guys!

Hi guys! Nakakuha ako slot ng WHV last February and decided to fly here in NZ by March. After a month of sending CVs, finally nakakuha na din ng job. Isa lang napansin ko, mostly yung mga employers, magrereply sa application mo after 2 to 4 weeks. And mas okay kung direct employer, kasi dito halos dinadaan sa recruitment agencies. Nilagay ko sa cover letter ko na i'm holding a WHV pero sinabi ko din na after ko makakuha ng job offer, mag appply ako ng Essential Skill visa kagad kasi 3 months lang pwede magwork sa same employer. And here, kelangan ng mga reference. Tatawagan talaga nila, in my case, 20 questions(about work and personality) daw tinanong ng employer ko sa mga referees ko. Sa dami ng pinadala ko na CVs, madalas ganito ang makikita niyong reply " Unfortunately we have applications with closer matching skills and experience, therefore we will not be progressing your application." pero wag kayo mabahala kasi madalas ganyan reply kapag sa agency( napansin ko lang). And para sa CV naman, kung maari iedit kada application, like be specific on the roles and skills, i-match sa mga requirements na nakalagay sa job ad na applyan. And wag lang basta basta copy/paste ng cover letter, dapat pakita na nagresearch ka about sa company and interesado ka talaga sa kanila. Prayer lang talaga and patience. Good luck sa inyo!

hi ryell, not yet. mag-aapply palang.
